Pull up a stool, grab a drink and learn something new.

Once upon a time, meeting a significant other online carried a certain social stigma. However, the times have changed in this ever-increasing digital world, and today's most popular online dating websites influence how we find, meet and interact with potential romantic partners.

Join Stephanie Tong, assistant professor of communication at Wayne State University, as she discusses how modern technology has transformed our search for romance. Learning how our romantic decision-making has changed with these new websites and apps might surprise you. We will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at HopCat Detroit's Huma Room in Midtown. The presentation begins at 6 p.m.

Currently, Tong is conducting a series of studies examining the ways in which popular online dating systems — OkCupid, Match.com, eHarmony, etc. — affect how daters make decisions when initiating romantic relationships.

Tong’s research investigates the intersection of social media and interpersonal relationships. She received her Ph.D. in communication research from Michigan State University. In her work, Tong focuses on how people use technology to initiate, maintain and terminate close relationships with family, friends and romantic partners. Her research has been featured in a variety of outlets including academic journals and media outlets. The research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and can be found at smartlabswayne.com.

Knowledge on Tap consists of live — and lively — discussions with some of Detroit’s greatest minds. The events are held every other month at a Midtown bar or restaurant and feature an informal presentation by one of Wayne State’s renowned faculty members on a topic of their choice, followed by dynamic conversation. All Knowledge on Tap events are free, open to the public and require no educational background. All ages are welcome.
